Discover more about Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa

The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, meaning "Mound of Shards," are located in the Karmouz district of Alexandria. Discovered in 1900 after a donkey accidentally fell into a hidden shaft, these catacombs are considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. The name refers to the terracotta fragments found at the entrance, remnants of jars brought by mourners. Constructed in the 2nd century AD during Roman rule, the catacombs served as a burial site for wealthy Alexandrian families. The design reflects a unique blend of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman influences, showcasing the cultural fusion that thrived in Alexandria. The tombs feature intricate carvings, statues, and burial chambers, offering insights into ancient funerary practices. The catacombs consist of three levels, descending approximately 35 meters (115 feet) underground. Visitors enter through a spiral staircase that surrounds a central shaft. The main rotunda features a central well and arched niches. The Hall of Caracalla, named after the Roman Emperor Caracalla, served as a communal burial chamber. The lowest level is often inaccessible due to water infiltration. Today, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa are one of Alexandria's main attractions.
