The Mustafa Kamel Necropolis, located in the Mustafa Kamel area of Alexandria, offers a fascinating look into the city's Ptolemaic past. This archaeological site consists of four tombs that were carved into the rock. The necropolis dates back to the late 3rd and early 2nd centuries BC. The tombs were discovered by accident in 1933 and 1934 during preparations to build a football field. Originally, the complex consisted of seven family tombs, richly decorated, providing insights into Alexandrian burial practices. Today, only four remain: the first two are subterranean, while the latter two have partially above-ground structures. The first tomb is accessed via a wide, rock-cut staircase leading to a courtyard surrounded by chambers. The southern part of the courtyard is adorned with colorful decorations and features a burial chamber with a sarcophagus. The second tomb, designed in the style of a Greek house, includes a courtyard with a sacrificial altar and a chamber for funeral prayers. The third tomb is partially rock-cut and features a courtyard that was likely used for growing flowers. The fourth tomb has a different design, with a staircase leading to a square courtyard surrounded by columns. Visiting the Mustafa Kamel Necropolis provides a unique opportunity to explore the art and architecture of Ptolemaic Alexandria and learn about the burial customs of its inhabitants.
