Founded in 1998 by William Wells, this independent, non-profit art space has been instrumental in promoting the work of both emerging and internationally recognized artists.The gallery's location is integral to its identity, fostering a unique symbiotic relationship between the art space and the surrounding community. The Townhouse supports artistic expression across various media, offering a diverse program of exhibitions, residencies for artists and curators, educational initiatives, and outreach programs. It has also been a catalyst for the development of other art spaces in Cairo.Townhouse Gallery hosts over twelve annual exhibitions in its main building, which includes the 650-square-meter Factory space and the First Floor Gallery. These exhibitions showcase the work of young, emerging talents alongside established artists with international acclaim. The gallery has also initiated large-scale events such as the citywide Nitaq Festival in 1999 and PhotoCairo, Egypt's first photography and video art festival in 2002.More than just an exhibition space, the Townhouse Gallery is a hub for cultural exchange and artistic development. It provides rehearsal and working spaces for theatre groups and filmmakers, houses an art library, and conducts an extensive outreach program with workshops and events for adults, children, and marginalized communities.
