The Statue of Abdul Moniem Riad, a prominent landmark in Port Said, commemorates General Abdul Moniem Riad, an Egyptian military leader who served as the Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces. Riad is highly regarded for his command during the 1967 Six-Day War and the War of Attrition. He was killed in action in 1969 and posthumously awarded Egypt's highest military decoration. His death is commemorated as Egyptian Martyrs' Day on March 9th.The statue is located in Martyrs' Park (حديقة الشهداء), also known as Obelisk Plaza, in the Al Sharq district. The park itself is a significant location, honoring the martyrs of Port Said. The statue, designed by artist Tarek El-Koumi, stands at 4.5 meters tall and weighs 820 kilograms. It is made of glass-reinforced concrete (GRC) and rests on a granite base, representing the rock on which Riad was martyred. The statue portrays Riad in a strong, upright stance, reflecting his military prowess and leadership.Visiting the statue offers a moment for reflection on Egyptian history and the sacrifices made by its heroes.
