Gabal Dakrur: Siwa's Panoramic Peak
Hike Gabal Dakrur for breathtaking panoramic views of Siwa Oasis, ancient history, and a taste of local culture.
Gabal Dakrur, also known as Gebel Dakrour, is a prominent mountain located approximately 3 kilometers southeast of Siwa Town in Egypt's Siwa Oasis. This triple-peaked mountain, riddled with caves and quarries, has been a significant site throughout history. The mountain isn't particularly large, making it an accessible climb for most visitors. Historically, the caves and quarries on Gabal Dakrur were utilized during the Late Period (26th-30th Dynasties) and the Ptolemaic period. Tombs dating back to the Roman period can also be found on the mountain. Local folklore suggests that Gabal el-Takrour is linked to King Ibrik, an ancient Siwa King, with tales of hidden treasuries within the mountain. There's also a story about an underground tunnel connecting Gabal al-Takrur, the Amun Temple, the Oracle Temple, and the Gabal al-Mauta tombs. Today, Gabal Dakrur is a popular destination for its panoramic views of Siwa Oasis, the vast palm groves, salt lakes, and the expansive desert. The hike to the summit takes around 20 minutes and is not overly strenuous, though some parts can be steep with loose gravel. Keep an eye out for fossils of coral and shells, remnants of an ancient sea that once covered the area. Every year, during the full moon in October, Siwans gather at Gabal Dakrur for a celebration known as the Tourism Feast, where they pray, give thanks, reconcile, and share a communal meal. This tradition highlights the mountain's continued importance in Siwi culture.
