The Ismailia Monuments Museum, one of Egypt's oldest regional museums, was established in 1932 to preserve and display archaeological finds from the Suez Canal region and North Sinai. The museum's creation coincided with the Suez Canal Excavation Project (1859-1869 AD), driven by French archaeologist Jean Cledat's discoveries in the area.The museum's collection comprises approximately 3,800-4,000 artifacts, offering a comprehensive overview of Egyptian cultural history from the Early Dynastic Period through the Islamic Era. Exhibits span prehistoric times, ancient Egyptian history, Islamic and Coptic periods, and Greek and Roman civilizations.Key highlights include a granite Sphinx from the Middle Kingdom, a marble sarcophagus from the Ptolemaic era, and a Roman floor mosaic from the 3rd century B.C.. The mosaic depicts scenes from Greek mythology, such as the triumph of Dionysus. Other notable items include statues, Coptic coins, pottery, and jewelry. The museum also features a collection of Hellenistic and Roman art, including Greek marble statues and Roman portrait heads.Visitors can explore 12 halls and external exhibits within a historical building blending Arab Islamic and European architectural designs.
