Tell Basta, also known as Bubastis, was once a vibrant city and a significant religious center in ancient Egypt. Located in the eastern Nile Delta, near the modern city of Zagazig, it served as the cult center for the feline goddess Bastet, associated with fertility and protection. The city was the capital of the 18th Lower Egyptian nome during the New Kingdom period and later became the capital of the entire country during the 22nd Dynasty. Excavations have revealed remnants of a temple of Pepi I from the 6th Dynasty, a palace of Amenemhat III, and a well dating back to the Roman period.
