Zagazig: A Nile Delta Hub

Zagazig, a significant city in the eastern Nile Delta, serves as the capital of the Al-Sharqia Governorate. Established in the 19th century, the city's origins trace back to a village named Nazlat az-Zaqāzīq. The name possibly originates from the Zaqzuq family or a Coptic word meaning 'small creature'.Mohamed Ali Pasha founded Zagazig to enhance irrigation in the Nile Delta, leading to its growth as a vital agricultural hub. By 1883, it replaced Belbeis as the region's most important city. Today, Zagazig is divided into Hay Awal and Hay Thany, featuring squares like Tala'ebHarb and El Tahrir.Near Zagazig lie the ruins of Bubastis, an ancient city dedicated to the cat goddess Bastet. This site includes temple remains and catacombs of sacred cats, offering insights into ancient Egyptian religious practices.The city is also home to Zagazig University, one of Egypt's largest, and the Orabi Museum, dedicated to Ahmed Orabi, a national leader born in Zagazig. The Grand Mosque of Zagazig, built in 1832, showcases historical Islamic architecture.
