Car
If you're traveling by car, start your journey from the main port town of Massawa. Head southwest on the A1 highway for about 30 kilometers until you reach the junction towards Nefasit. Turn left onto the road leading to Nefasit and follow the signs for approximately 15 kilometers. Debre Bizen Monastery is located just outside of Nefasit, so keep an eye out for the signs indicating the monastery. There is usually parking available near the entrance.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a bus from Massawa to Nefasit. Buses depart regularly from the central bus station in Massawa. The journey takes about 1 hour and costs approximately 10 ERN (Eritrean Nakfa). Once you arrive in Nefasit, you can either walk to Debre Bizen, which is about 3 kilometers away, or hire a local taxi for around 50 ERN to take you directly to the monastery.
Walking
If you prefer to walk from Nefasit to Debre Bizen, exit the bus at the main square in Nefasit. From there, head southwest towards the outskirts of the town, following the path signs leading to the monastery. The walk is approximately 3 kilometers and takes around 30-40 minutes. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the path can be hot.
Taxi
Alternatively, if you're in Nefasit and want a more direct option, you can take a taxi from anywhere in the town to Debre Bizen. Taxis are commonly available, and the fare should be around 50 ERN. Make sure to agree on the price before starting your journey.
