Car
If you are traveling by car from nearby islands such as Hiiumaa or Muhu, head towards the ferry terminal in Kuivastu on Muhu Island. Take the ferry from Kuivastu to Saaremaa, which takes about 30 minutes. The ferry operates regularly, and a ticket costs approximately €10 for a standard vehicle. Once you arrive at the Saaremaa ferry terminal, follow the signs directing you towards Kuressaare, the capital of Saaremaa, which is about a 30-minute drive from the terminal.
Bus
For those using public transportation, you can catch a bus from Tallinn or other major cities to Kuressaare. The bus journey takes around 4-5 hours. Once you arrive in Kuressaare, local transport options, including taxis and bike rentals, are available for exploring the island. Ensure to check the bus schedules ahead of your travel, as services may vary, especially during off-peak seasons.
Ferry (foot passengers)
If you’re traveling as a foot passenger from Muhu Island, you can take the same ferry from Kuivastu to Saaremaa. Tickets for foot passengers are around €5, and you can enjoy the views during the 30-minute crossing. Upon arrival, public transport options or bike rentals in Kuressaare will help you explore the island further.
Combination (Car + Ferry)
For those coming from the mainland, drive to Virtsu, where you will find the ferry terminal to Muhu Island. Take the ferry to Muhu (around 30 minutes, approximately €10 for a car). After reaching Muhu, drive to Kuivastu and take the second ferry to Saaremaa (about 30 minutes, €10 for a car). Once on Saaremaa, proceed to Kuressaare, which is about a 30-minute drive from the ferry terminal.
