Getting There

  • Car

    From Lavumisa Border Post, head south on the N2 highway towards the town of Hluhluwe. Continue driving for approximately 50 kilometers. Take the R618 exit towards Ulundi and keep following the R618 for about 30 kilometers. Then turn right onto the R34 towards Empangeni. After about 12 kilometers, you will see signs for Phongolo Nature Reserve. Follow the signs, and you will reach the entrance of the reserve. Note that there may be a small entrance fee to access the reserve.

    From Lavumisa Border Post, take a minibus taxi heading towards Hluhluwe. The fare is typically around 50 ZAR. Once you reach Hluhluwe, transfer to another taxi heading towards Ulundi. After about 30 kilometers, get off at the R34 junction. From there, you may need to arrange for a local taxi or ride-share service to take you to Phongolo Nature Reserve, as it is not directly served by public transport. Be prepared for an additional cost for this last leg, typically around 100 ZAR.
