Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving, start from the center of Gojjam. Head northeast on the main road towards the town of Bahir Dar. After approximately 50 kilometers, you will reach the town of Debre Markos. From Debre Markos, continue on the main road for another 40 kilometers until you reach the town of Woldia. At Woldia, look for signs directing you towards Debre Damo. • Public Transportation

  To reach Debre Damo using public transportation, take a bus from Gojjam to Debre Markos. The journey typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. After reaching Woldia, inquire locally for a shared taxi or an arranged ride to Debre Damo. Costs for the bus to Debre Markos will be around 50 Ethiopian Birr, and the minibus to Woldia is approximately 30 Birr. The taxi ride from Woldia to Debre Damo will be an additional cost, likely ranging from 100 to 200 Birr based on negotiation.

• Hiking

  If you are adventurous and physically fit, after arriving in Woldia, you can hike to Debre Damo. This route is not well-marked and requires a local guide who knows the trails. It's advisable to arrange this in Woldia before starting your hike. The hike may take around 3-4 hours depending on your pace and the trail conditions. Ensure you wear appropriate hiking gear and carry sufficient water. Hiring a local guide may cost around 200-300 Birr.
