Asheton St. Maryam Monastery: A Highland Sanctuary

Asheton St. Maryam Monastery, also known as Asheton Maryam Monastery, is a revered monastic sanctuary located high in the mountains near Lalibela, Ethiopia. Set at an elevation of approximately 3,150 meters (10,335 feet) on Mount Abuna Yosef, the monastery offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Believed to have been founded in the 13th century, possibly by King Lalibela himself, the monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and remains an important pilgrimage site for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. Its remote location reflects the historical Ethiopian practice of building monasteries in secluded, hard-to-reach areas, symbolizing the monks' and pilgrims' commitment to spiritual devotion. While some sources attribute its construction to King Lalibela, others suggest it was initiated by him and completed by his successor, King Ne'akuto Le'ab (1215-1255). The monastery shares architectural similarities with the famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, as it is also hewn from a single rock. However, compared to those intricate churches, Asheton Maryam's architecture appears relatively simple. The monastery's true appeal lies in the spectacular mountain scenery. Among the treasured items is a beautifully illustrated Bible manuscript written in Ge'ez, the ancient liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, along with crosses, prayer sticks, and icons. The journey to Asheton St. Maryam Monastery is an experience in itself, often involving a challenging hike or mule ride along narrow, steep paths. The trek typically takes about 5 hours from Lalibela, or a shorter 30-minute climb from a nearby car park. Along the way, hikers pass through small rural villages and enjoy increasingly impressive views.
