Walking
From the center of Lalibela, the most common way to reach Asheton St. Maryam Monastery is by foot. The hike is a challenging uphill trek that takes approximately 5 hours. Follow the well-marked trails leading out of town and towards Mount Abuna Yosef. The path passes through rural villages, offering glimpses into local life. Be prepared for steep inclines and uneven terrain. Alternatively, negotiate with locals for a mule to assist with the ascent. Ensure you have adequate water and snacks for the journey. Entrance fee to the monastery is $20-$30 USD.
Taxi/Tuk-tuk & Walking
For a less strenuous approach, hire a taxi or tuk-tuk from Lalibela to the car park closer to the monastery. Negotiate the fare beforehand, expect to pay around 100-200 Ethiopian Birr. From the car park, a final 30-minute climb on foot is required to reach Asheton St. Maryam Monastery. This path is still steep but significantly shorter than the full hike from Lalibela. Entrance fee to the monastery is $20-$30 USD.
