Bete Abba Libanos: The House of Abbot Libanos

Bete Abba Libanos, also known as the House of Abbot Libanos, is an extraordinary rock-cut monolith church in Lalibela, Ethiopia. As part of Lalibela's eleven monolithic churches, it holds UNESCO World Heritage status, celebrated for its unique architectural style and historical importance. The church is dedicated to Saint Abba Libanos, a revered Ethiopian saint. What sets Bete Abba Libanos apart is that it is not fully separated from the rock. While its four walls are freestanding, the roof remains connected to the surrounding stone. Many of its architectural details, like the friezes, are Aksumite in style. The exterior gives the impression of a large interior, but the inside is surprisingly small. The cubic capitals are adorned with carvings representing angel eyes. Legend says that Bete Abba Libanos was built in a single night by Meskel Kebra, King Lalibela's wife, with assistance from angels. The church is carved into a vertical rock face, similar to structures in Petra. Inside, the church follows a basilica plan. Some priests claim that a mysterious light emanates from the altar.
