Gishen Mariam: Ethiopia's Sacred Mountain Church

Gishen Mariam, also known as Amba Geshen, is a significant site for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, located 483 kilometers north of Addis Ababa in the South Wollo Zone. The church sits atop a mountain with a naturally formed cross-shape, playing a vital role in Ethiopia's medieval political history as a royal prison. Emperor Zara Yacob brought a piece of the True Cross to Gishen, adding to its spiritual importance. The church is not only a place of worship but also a testament to Ethiopia's deep-rooted Christian traditions, often drawing pilgrims who come to pay their respects and seek divine inspiration. The surrounding environment is equally enchanting, providing a peaceful backdrop for reflection and meditation. Gishen Mariam is comprised of four churches: Gishen Mariam, Kidus Michael, Kidus Gebrael, and Egziare Ab. The Church of Egziabhier Ab (God the father) stands where the fragment of the True Cross is kept. Thousands of Ethiopians make a pilgrimage to Gishen every year. Many walk over 82 kilometers from Dessie to make their pilgrimage more meaningful. The major festival takes place twice a year, at the end of September and in January.
