Discover more about Guassa Community Conservation Area

Guassa Community Conservation Area (GCCA) is a protected area in the Amhara region of central Ethiopia, known for its stunning Afro-alpine landscapes and rich biodiversity. As one of the oldest known common property resource management systems in Sub-Saharan Africa, the GCCA has been managed by local communities for over 400 years. This long-standing tradition, known as the “Qero” system, has helped preserve the area's unique ecosystem and cultural heritage. The GCCA ranges in altitude from 3,200 to 3,700 meters above sea level, characterized by rugged mountain plateaus, deep gorges, and river valleys. The landscape is dominated by Afro-alpine grasslands, moorlands, and patches of juniper forest, creating a diverse habitat for a variety of plant and animal species. The area is home to several endemic species, including the Ethiopian wolf, gelada baboon, and Ethiopian highland hare. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the 114 recorded bird species, including many birds of prey and migratory birds. Visitors to the GCCA can explore the area through a network of hiking trails, ranging from short day hikes to multi-day treks. These trails offer opportunities to experience the stunning scenery, observe wildlife, and interact with local communities. The Guassa Community Lodge provides comfortable accommodation and serves as a base for exploring the area. For a more immersive experience, visitors can also opt for wilderness camping. Engaging with the local communities provides an enriching experience, as you learn about their traditional practices and sustainable methods of living in harmony with nature. Ecotourism initiatives support the conservation of the GCCA while providing alternative income for local communities.
