Hayk Lake, also known as 'Lake Lake' , is a picturesque freshwater lake located in the Debub Wollo Zone of the Amhara Region, north of Dessie, Ethiopia. Situated at an elevation of 2,030 meters, the lake stretches 6.7 km in length and 6 km in width, covering a surface area of 23 square kilometers. This scenic lake is not only a place of natural beauty but also holds significant historical and cultural importance. According to local legend, the lake's origin is tied to a tale of divine retribution, where God transformed the land to avenge a wronged pregnant woman. This legend adds a mystical aura to the serene waters. The lake is home to Hayk Istafanos Monastery, founded in the 9th century and later becoming a prominent monastic center in the 13th century. The monastery played a crucial role in Ethiopian history, with notable figures like Yekuno Amlak, who restored the Solomonic dynasty, receiving their education and coronation there. The monastery's church, dedicated to St. Stephen, was initially built in the Axumite style but was destroyed and rebuilt several times.
