Discover more about Svartafoss Waterfall

Svartafoss Waterfall, whose name translates to 'Black Waterfall,' is a captivating natural attraction situated a mere 2 kilometers north of Tórshavn's old town. The waterfall flows within Hoydalsá stream, descending through Hoydalar, and historically marked the boundary between Tórshavn and Hoyvík. The waterfall gets its name because, during periods of drought, the stone wall behind the falls appears black. Svartafoss has been a local favorite for generations. Historically, residents of Tórshavn gathered sod in this area for their fireplaces. On Sundays, it was a popular destination for leisurely walks to enjoy the scenery. An old sheepfold, once used by a local farmer, still stands near the waterfall. Today, Svartafoss is within Tórshavn's city limits, and the surrounding area is a protected space with well-maintained trails. Visitors can enjoy the lush surroundings, observe local flora and fauna, and capture stunning photographs, especially during the early morning or late afternoon when the light enhances the basalt columns and cascading water.
