Skarðsáfossur: A Hidden Faroese Waterfall

Skarðsáfossur, nestled on the island of Vágar, is a hidden gem among the many waterfalls of the Faroe Islands. Situated between the villages of Bøur and Gásadalur, this natural attraction provides a mesmerizing view of water plunging from the cliffs edge onto a small black stone beach. Unlike the popular Múlafossur waterfall, Skarðsáfossur remains relatively untouched by tourism, offering a serene experience. The waterfall is best viewed from the sea, as the landside area is private property. Boat tours along the Sørvágsfjørður fjord offer the most direct access, providing breathtaking views of the falls, the islet of Tindhólmur, and the sea arch Drangarnir. To reach the waterfall by land, one can park near the tunnel leading to Gásadalur and hike towards the ocean. Although the path is not always clearly marked, the reward is a stunning vista of the waterfall cascading onto the rocky beach below. Exploring after a rainfall enhances the experience, as the increased water volume amplifies the waterfall's beauty.
