Discover more about Norðoya Fornminnissavn

Norðoya Fornminnissavn, established in 1968, is located in Klaksvík, the second-largest town in the Faroe Islands. The museum resides within a well-preserved merchant house, constructed in 1838 as a branch of the Danish monopoly trade in Tórshavn. This building provides a tangible link to the past, allowing visitors to experience Faroese life in earlier times. The museum features two main exhibition rooms. One room displays a variety of everyday items and tools from past centuries, offering insight into life on the northern islands. Highlights include an ancient slate grinding mill, still in use during World War II, and old photographs capturing the essence of the northern isles. The second room, known as “The Chemistry Room”, was originally a draper's shop in 1919 and later a chemistry lab from 1932 to 1961. It remains in its original state, complete with shelves of bottles, flasks, and chemical tools. Seventeen paintings adorn the ceiling beams, adding an artistic touch. Beyond the main building, the museum also oversees several historical properties in the northern islands, including the abandoned village of Fossá, a storage building in Gerðum, and a historic watermill in Kunoy. A visit to Norðoya Fornminnissavn provides a unique opportunity to connect with the rich history and traditions of the Faroe Islands.
