Getting there

Walking

Kongaminnið is located on Hoyvíksvegur and is easily accessible on foot from central Tórshavn. From the Tórshavn Bus Terminal, head south towards the main street, and then turn left onto Hoyvíksvegur. Continue walking along Hoyvíksvegur for approximately 1.2 km. Kongaminnið will be on your right. The walk should take around 15 minutes. There are no costs associated with walking.

Public Transport

The red city buses in Tórshavn are free to use. Check local bus routes to see which bus stops near Kongaminnið on Hoyvíksvegur. From the bus stop, it is a short walk to the monument. The buses run frequently and are an excellent way to explore the city.

Taxi

Taxis are available in Tórshavn, and a ride from the city center to Kongaminnið would be a short trip. Expect to pay around 80-120 DKK for the ride, depending on traffic and the taxi company. Taxis can be found near the harbor or contacted by phone.

Kongaminnið stands as a poignant reminder of the first royal visit to the Faroe Islands. The basalt obelisk was erected in 1882 to commemorate King Christian IX's visit in 1874. The King's visit was a significant event for the islands, marking a new chapter in their relationship with Denmark.However, the royal visit was also marked by tragedy. During the welcome speech, the mayor of Tórshavn fainted and died on the spot in front of the King and the assembled crowd. It is said that King Christian IX was deeply affected by this event and financially supported the mayor's widow for the rest of her life.Today, Kongaminnið offers visitors a place for quiet reflection and a chance to delve deeper into the history of the Faroe Islands.
