Svartafoss Waterfall: A Hidden Gem Near Tórshavn

Svartafossur, meaning 'Black Waterfall,' is a stunning waterfall located just 2 km north of Tórshavn's old town in Hoydalsá. The waterfall flows through Hoydalar and once marked the boundary between Tórshavn and Hoyvík. Svartafoss is particularly magnificent during rainy weather. However, in summer, after a long drought, there is only a small amount of water in the river and waterfall. At that time, the stone wall behind it appears black, which is how the waterfall got its name.Surrounded by lush greenery and rugged landscapes, Svartafoss presents a perfect opportunity for hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. As the city has expanded, Svartafossur now lies within the city limits. However, the city council has designated the area around the waterfall and Hoydalsá as a protected area.
