Discover more about Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park - Visitor Information Center

The Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, established in 1989, protects a remarkable landscape formed over thousands of years by wind and river erosion. Located near the mouth of the Sigatoka River on Viti Levu's Coral Coast, the park spans 650 hectares and features parabolic dunes reaching up to 60 meters. These dunes, composed of fine, peppery-grey sand, are not only visually stunning but also of significant archaeological importance. Archaeological excavations have revealed a rich history, with artifacts dating back 2,600 years. The park contains one of the largest burial sites in the South Pacific, yielding pottery shards, stone tools, and human remains linked to the Lapita people, early inhabitants of Fiji. These discoveries offer insights into the region's past and are showcased at the Fiji Museum in Suva. The park's diverse ecosystems include native forests, reforested areas, and coastal vegetation, supporting a variety of plant and animal life. Birdwatchers can spot over 37 bird species, including eight endemic to Fiji. The park also provides refuge for reptiles like skinks and the Pacific Boa, as well as fruit bats and the Fijian Swallowtail Butterfly. Visitors can explore the dunes via two main hiking trails, a shorter one-hour loop and a longer two-hour loop, each offering unique perspectives and views. The park is open daily from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
