Getting There

  • Taxi

From Cuvu, a taxi is the most direct way to reach Volivoli Cave. Negotiate a fare with a local taxi driver for a short trip to the cave's location (RFRJ+4W9, Cuvu). The flag-fall rate in Viti Levu starts from FJD2.00 (~USD0.90) between 6am to 9pm. The flagfall outside of these hours is FJD3 (~USD1.30). The cost should be relatively low due to the short distance. Confirm the price before starting your journey, as some drivers may negotiate fares.

  • Walking

From the Sigatoka Town Center, head south on Main Street, passing the Sigatoka Market. Continue straight until the junction with Cuvu Road. Turn left onto Cuvu Road and continue walking for about 2 km until you see the sign for Volivoli Beach on your right. From there, inquire with the staff for directions to the Volivoli Cave, which is a short hike away along the coastal path. There are no costs associated with walking.

Discover more about Volivoli Cave

Volivoli Cave, also known as Sand Cave, is located near Cuvu on the south coast of Viti Levu, Fiji. This cave is a significant archaeological site, offering a unique window into Fiji's prehistoric past. The cave contains extinct megafaunal remains dating back 20,000 to 25,000 years, including a crocodilian, tortoise, giant iguana (Lapitiguana), boid snake, three frog species, and several birds. Notably, remains of a previously unknown giant megapode (Megavitiornis) and a giant pigeon (Natunaornis) were also discovered. Three human burials, fragments of adzes, undecorated pottery, and shells have also been found within the cave, indicating human use and habitation. The cave's entrance features a man-made wall, likely dating back over 200 years when Yadua Village was located above the cave. Visiting Volivoli Cave requires some preparation. It's recommended to explore only the first 70 meters, as the rest becomes narrow and low. Good shoes, strong lighting (at least two sources per person), and gloves are recommended. Cane farming since the mid-1970s has led to an ephemeral stream flowing from the entrance into the cave, redistributing sediment and causing some destruction of archaeological remains. Despite this, Volivoli Cave remains an important site for education, research, and eco/geo-tourism. The cave is open daily from 7 AM to 6 PM.
