Discover more about Denarau Island

Denarau Island, though not a true island, stands as a testament to modern tourism in Fiji. Created from reclaimed mangrove swamps in the late 1960s, it is connected to Viti Levu by a short causeway. This 2.55 km2 resort area is located 5 km northwest of Nadi and 10 km west of Nadi International Airport. Denarau is renowned for its concentration of hotels and resorts, featuring international chains like Hilton, Sheraton, Radisson, Westin, and Sofitel. The 18-hole Denarau Golf Course serves as its centerpiece, attracting golf enthusiasts from around the globe. The island also boasts the Port Denarau Marina, a vital sea transfer hub for the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. Historically, Denarau's development began in 1969 with American developer Dennis McElrath. The first hotel, The Regent of Fiji (now the Westin Denarau), opened in 1975. A Japanese property developer, EIE International, purchased Denarau in stages between 1988 and 1991, investing $200 million in development, including an 18-hole golf course and a marina. After EIE's bankruptcy in 1995, a consortium of Tabua Investments, ITT Sheraton, and Air Pacific acquired the resort. Today, Denarau offers a wide array of activities, from water sports and adventure activities to cultural experiences. Visitors can explore the Port Denarau Marina, relax at the Big Bula Waterpark, or take a sunset dinner cruise. The island's blend of traditional Fijian heritage and contemporary influences creates a unique atmosphere.
