Discover more about Momi Battery Historical Park

Momi Battery Historical Park, located on the western side of Viti Levu, offers a glimpse into Fiji's role in World War II. As one of six gun batteries built to protect Fiji from potential Japanese invasion, the site overlooks the Navula Passage, a strategic entry point to western Fiji. Construction began in 1940, with the New Zealand Army installing two 6-inch naval guns by April 1941. These guns, each 7 meters long and weighing 7.5 tonnes, could fire 45-kilogram shells over 14 kilometers. The battery also included an observation post, fire control room, ammunition storage, and defensive bunkers. American troops later took over manning the battery in 1942, even installing a sonar system. Although the guns were only fired twice in defense, the site stands as a reminder of the threat Fiji faced during the war. Today, visitors can explore the well-maintained park, observing the guns and associated structures. The Visitor Information Centre provides historical context with informative panels. A short walk around the park allows visitors to appreciate the strategic placement of the guns and the stunning views of the Malolo Barrier Reef and Mamanuca Islands. The park is open daily and offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty.
