Discover more about Haaga Rhododendron Park

Haaga Rhododendron Park, or *Haagan Alppiruusupuisto* in Finnish, is a captivating urban oasis located in the Haaga district of Helsinki. This unique park serves as both a public green space and a plant breeding research site for the University of Helsinki. Founded in 1975, the park was created to develop rhododendron varieties that could thrive in the Finnish climate. Originally, 3,000 rhododendron seedlings from Arboretum Mustila were planted in the bog area, which was then drained and equipped with corridors and viewing platforms. Over time, the park expanded to include over 300 varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas, showcasing a stunning array of colors, particularly during the peak blooming season in early June. The azaleas typically bloom first, sometimes lasting longer than the rhododendrons. Visitors can explore the park via gravel paths and accessible wooden walkways that meander through the towering rhododendron bushes. The park is wheelchair accessible, making it a welcoming destination for everyone. The park also features a forest garden with hydrangeas that add color in the autumn. Haaga Rhododendron Park offers a tranquil retreat from the city, where visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of nature and enjoy the sweet fragrance of the flowers.
