Discover more about Svenska Teatern

Svenska Teatern, or the Swedish Theater, has been a cultural landmark in Helsinki since its establishment in 1866. As the first national stage of Finland, it holds a significant place in the country's theatrical history. The theater is located on the Erottaja square, at the end of Esplanadi, placing it in the heart of the city's cultural district. The theater's architecture is a blend of neoclassical and functionalist styles, reflecting its evolution over the years. The original building, designed by Georg Theodor von Chiewitz, opened in 1860 but was destroyed by fire in 1863. It was rebuilt in 1866 in the Neoclassical style by Nicholas Benois. In the 1930s, architects Eero Saarinen and Jarl Eklund modernized the building, adding functionalist elements. Svenska Teatern primarily stages performances in Swedish, one of Finland's two official languages. However, many productions include Finnish, and occasionally English surtitles, making them accessible to a broader audience. The theater's repertoire includes both domestic and international plays, ranging from classic dramas to contemporary works, musicals, and children's plays. In addition to its regular performances, Svenska Teatern hosts special events, guest performances, and co-productions with other theaters and groups. Visitors can enhance their experience by attending play introductions, discussions, workshops, and guided tours of the theater. The surrounding area offers a variety of cafes and restaurants, making it an ideal location for a cultural outing.
