Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Public Transport
The most common way to reach Suomenlinna is by ferry from Helsinki's Market Square. HSL ferries operate year-round, departing frequently from the Market Square. The journey takes approximately 15-20 minutes. A single ticket costs €3 and can be purchased from ticket machines at the Market Square or via the HSL app. Suomenlinna is located in HSL ticket zone A. With the Helsinki Card, the ferry journey is free.
Walking
Once on the island, walking is the primary mode of transport. The main pier is located on Iso Mustasaari island. From there, you can explore the various islands of Suomenlinna on foot. Be aware that the terrain is uneven, with cobblestone streets and some hills. A more accessible route is available, but it is not signposted. Consider using the Taksi Viapori pedicab service for assistance.
