Discover more about Suomenlinna

Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands as a testament to military architecture and a captivating destination for tourists. Construction began in 1748 under Swedish rule, when Finland was part of Sweden, to protect against Russian expansion. Initially named Sveaborg (Fortress of Sweden), it was also known as Viapori in Finnish until 1918. The fortress islands eventually surrendered to Russia in 1808, paving the way for Russian control of Finland and the establishment of the Grand Duchy of Finland. Throughout the 19th century, the Russians expanded and garrisoned Suomenlinna, but it suffered damage during the Crimean War. In 1917, after Finland declared independence, the fortress was officially renamed Suomenlinna (Fortress of Finland). Today, Suomenlinna is a vibrant part of Helsinki, offering visitors a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Explore its museums, wander through the old bunkers and fortifications, or simply enjoy a picnic with stunning sea views. The Suomenlinna Museum provides a comprehensive overview of the fortress's history.
