Piippu: A Landmark of Jyväskylä's Industrial Past

Piippu, meaning 'chimney' in Finnish, is a towering structure that marks the site of the former Kankaan paper mill in Jyväskylä. Established in 1872, the Kankaan paper mill was a significant employer and a cornerstone of the local economy for many years. The mill closed its doors in the 21st century, but Piippu remains as a symbol of Jyväskylä's industrial past. Originally built in 1936 as part of the mill's power plant, the chimney played a crucial role in the paper production process. In its original state, Piippu was taller, but due to its deteriorating condition, it was shortened to approximately 70 meters. In 2011, Piippu was protected by a preservation order, ensuring its survival as a historical landmark. Today, Piippu is illuminated with impressive lighting, accentuating its historical value and making it a majestic landmark within the modern urban environment. The area surrounding Piippu has been redeveloped into a modern urban district, blending the old with the new. While visitors cannot enter the structure itself, Piippu serves as a focal point and a reminder of the area's transformation from an industrial site to a vibrant part of the city.
