Nestled in the town of Parola, the Holy Cross Church stands as a testament to Finnish history and Lutheran architecture. Constructed in the late 15th century, the church is unique for being built entirely of brick, a rarity for medieval Finnish churches, with grey stone being the more common material. Only two other medieval buildings in Finland share this distinction: Turku Cathedral and Hämeenlinna Castle. The church's interior is adorned with vibrant lime paint frescoes dating back to the early 16th century, depicting biblical stories and the legend of St. Helen's discovery of the Holy Cross. These paintings, remarkably well-preserved, provide a glimpse into the religious art of the period. The church also houses several wooden sculptures, including a triumph crucifix crafted by the Master of Lieto, the first known Finnish sculptor, and a carved and painted pulpit from 1550, the oldest surviving pulpit in Finland.
