Getting There

  • Walking

    KUMMA is located in the heart of Kuopio, approximately 200 meters from the Kuopio Market Square. From the market square, walk along Kauppakatu street towards the Kuopio Cathedral. The museum will be on your left, at Kauppakatu 35, opposite the cathedral. There are paid street parking spaces available on Vuorikatu and Kauppakatu next to the museum. The marketplace underground parking is also within walking distance. Walking is free.

    KUMMA is easily accessible by public transport. Most local buses run alongside the market square, which is about 200 meters from the museum. Use the Vilkku search to find the connections and stops that match your timetable and departure location. As of July 2025, a single ticket within zones A and B costs €3.35 when using a Waltti card or mobile app. A single ticket purchased with cash costs €4.75. Day tickets are also available.

KUMMA, previously known as the Kuopio Art Museum, stands as a vibrant center for visual arts in Kuopio. Established in 1980, the museum resides within a stunning Art Nouveau building that was originally constructed as a bank in 1904. The museum's collection includes approximately 6,700 works, primarily focusing on Finnish art. The museum's exhibitions explore themes such as landscape, nature, and the relationship between humans and their environment. KUMMA also hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing contemporary art, including paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, and media art. In addition to its exhibitions, KUMMA is committed to providing visual art services, including research, documentation, and art education. The museum also houses a museum shop and GalleriA, and the Kuopio Art Lending Service, in cooperation with the Kuopio Visual Artists Association – Ars Libera. KUMMA's collections include works from the Kuopio Art Museum, the City of Kuopio, Osk. Huttunen, Leonardo da Vilhu, and Pekka Halonen, among others. The museum's own collection, which has been growing since 1981, features contemporary art from Northern Savonia and classics from the 19th century to the present.
