    Discover more about Maretarium

Maretarium, officially Kotka Maretarium, opened its doors in 2002 as a public aquarium dedicated to showcasing Finland's native fish species and aquatic environments. Located on the shores of Sapokanlahti bay in Kotka, it's a collaborative project between the City of Kotka, the University of Helsinki, and the Game and Fisheries Research Institute. The Maretarium features approximately 60 permanent fish species native to Finland, displayed across 22 themed aquariums. The largest of these is the Baltic Sea Pool, a cylindrical basin holding 500,000 liters of water with a high glass wall that serves as part of the Meriteatteri maritime theater. Visitors can observe the fish adapting to the Finnish seasons, with spawning times varying throughout the year. Beyond the aquariums, Maretarium offers a comprehensive experience with exhibits on fish research, a nature school, and a souvenir shop. The Meri Café Kristina provides refreshments, making it a destination for the whole family. The aquarium also focuses on educating visitors about Finnish aquatic nature and water protection. Occasional diver feedings in the Baltic Sea tank offer a special viewing opportunity. Maretarium is committed to sustainable tourism, operating as a responsible destination.
