Lanupuisto: Where Art Meets Nature

Lanupuisto, located on Kariniemenmäki near Lake Vesijärvi in Lahti, is a captivating sculpture park created between 1988 and 1992. Artist Olavi Lanu was commissioned by the city of Lahti to create twelve sculptures for the park, which have since become a beloved attraction. Lanu's sculptures, made of concrete, are designed to blend seamlessly with the natural environment, mimicking materials like stone, branches, and ice. The sculptures depict human figures in various poses—hugging, kissing, sitting—and natural forms like rocks and trees. Lanu's family members, students, and friends served as models for the figures, and students from the Lahti Art Institute assisted in the sculptures' creation. Over time, the sculptures have gradually become covered in moss, enhancing their integration with the forest. The changing seasons add a unique dimension to the park, making it a destination year-round. Visitors are encouraged to explore the park's network of paths and discover the sculptures hidden within the forest. The soft, muted tones and simplified forms of the sculptures help them merge with their surroundings, creating a sense of harmony between art and nature. Lanupuisto offers a peaceful escape and a chance to contemplate the relationship between humans and the environment.
