Harakka Island, a short ferry ride from Helsinki's Kaivopuisto Park, offers a tranquil escape into the archipelago. The island's history is rich, having served as a military outpost since Finland was under Russian rule; it later was occupied by the Finnish Defence Forces. Opened to the public in 1989, Harakka now welcomes visitors to explore its diverse landscapes and historical remnants. The island's varied terrain includes alder groves, coastal meadows, and rocky ponds, creating a haven for diverse plant and birdlife. Birdwatchers will appreciate the variety of seabirds, while nature enthusiasts can explore the marked nature trail. The Harakka Nature Centre provides information about the Baltic Sea, archipelago nature, and sustainable living. Housed in a former Russian barracks built in 1908, the center offers exhibitions and tools for visitors to borrow, such as binoculars and nets. Historical buildings, some dating back to the time when Finland was a Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire, dot the island and tell the story of its past. Visitors can explore old casemates and learn about the island's strategic importance. The island also hosts the Harakka Artists' House, with studios for professional artists and artisans, and often features art exhibitions. Note that dogs are not allowed on the island to protect the wildlife. During nesting season, some routes may be closed to avoid disturbing the birds.
