Discover more about Malmska Gården (Jakobstad Museum)

Step back in time at Malmska Gården, the main building of the Jakobstad Museum, where you can explore the rich maritime history of Jakobstad and the legacy of the Malm family. Completed in 1838, the estate was home to four generations of the Malm family, prominent merchants and shipowners who played a significant role in shaping the city. Inside the house, you'll find beautifully preserved interiors that reflect the lifestyle of a wealthy 19th-century merchant family. The office, with its original furnishings, offers a glimpse into the world of maritime trade. The museum also boasts a collection of over 50 ship portraits, painted by French, German, and English artists during the ships' brief stays in port. These portraits offer a unique perspective on the vessels built in Jakobstad and the artists who captured their likenesses. The museum complex includes several outbuildings that showcase different aspects of life in Jakobstad. Visit the general store, the ladies' hairdressing salon, a worker's dwelling, a peasant cottage, and a rigging chamber to gain a deeper understanding of the city's social and economic history. The exhibition hall Tempus and a children's playground are also located on the grounds. The Malm family's influence extended far beyond Jakobstad. Peter Malm, a prominent member of the family, owned the Hercules, the first Finnish ship to circumnavigate the globe. By the end of 1840, he owned 12 ships, making him the largest shipowner in the city and throughout Finland. Amalie Malm's wedding dress from 1855 is one of the museum's prized possessions. The museum also has an extensive art collection, including works by Fanny Churberg and Helena Westermarck.
