Tankar Lighthouse: A Beacon of History and Nature

Tankar Lighthouse, situated on the island of Tankar, is more than just a navigational aid; it's a journey through time and nature. The island itself has a rich history, having been inhabited since the 16th century by fishermen and seal hunters. The name 'Tankar' comes from 'Tankokari,' referring to a stone landmark that once stood on the island. As shipping traffic increased in the 19th century, the need for a lighthouse became apparent. Completed in 1889, the Tankar Lighthouse was constructed with iron components manufactured in Germany and a lighting element from Paris. The tower, covered in metal plates, features a spiral staircase with 122 steps. For decades, the lighthouse has protected coastal fishermen and guided seafarers to Kokkola's port. Today, Tankar is a popular tourist destination, offering a blend of historical and natural attractions. Visitors can explore the well-preserved lighthouse (though the lantern room is closed to the public), the old fishing village with its painted cabins, and a wooden church built in 1754. The island also features a seal hunting museum, a bird observatory, and a nature trail showcasing the unique flora and fauna of the archipelago. The lighthouse itself is still operational and one of Finland's brightest. The surrounding buildings, once home to lighthouse keepers, pilots, and fishermen, have been renovated for tourism, offering accommodations and a glimpse into the lives of those who once called this remote island home.
