Öjen Nature Trail: A Coastal Forest Escape

The Öjen Nature Trail, located in Sundom, just south of Vaasa, offers a refreshing escape into the heart of Finnish nature. This 4.5 km trail meanders through a diverse landscape of old-growth forest, dominated by spruce and featuring both lush, swampy areas and barren pinewoods. As a protected area within the European Union's Natura 2000 network, Öjen showcases undisturbed natural beauty.Visitors can explore varying habitats and observe trees that have stood for nearly 200 years, untouched by logging for decades. The trail is well-marked with informative signs that share insights into the area's nature, medicinal plants, and local folk tales. Keep an eye out for the two compass roses at the highest point of Öjen, Kompassberget's rock. These rock formations indicate the four or eight points of the compass.The relatively flat terrain makes the trail accessible for a variety of hikers, though duckboards along the path can be slippery depending on weather conditions. A campfire site with benches, firewood, and a dry toilet provides a place to rest and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Note that the trail is not maintained during the winter. Öjen's proximity to Vaasa makes it an ideal destination for a day trip, offering a blend of recreation and natural discovery.
