Discover more about Seinäjoki Museums, The Civil Guard and Lotta Svärd Museum

The Seinäjoki Civil Guard and Lotta Svärd Museum is located in the heart of Seinäjoki, within the South Ostrobothnia Civil Guard headquarters, a building designed by the renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and completed in 1926. The museum offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the history and significance of the Civil Guard (Suojeluskunta) and the Lotta Svärd organization, two key components of Finland's national defense in the early 20th century. The Civil Guard was established in 1917, in the aftermath of Finland's independence, with the mission to protect the nation. The Lotta Svärd was a women’s auxiliary organization that supported the military, providing essential services. The museum's exhibits feature artifacts, documents, and photographs that illustrate the activities, training, and contributions of these groups. Displays also include personal items belonging to Matti Laurila, commander of the Southern Ostrobothnia Civil Guard. The building itself is a piece of history, exemplifying refined classicism and South Ostrobothnian building traditions. Some of the interiors, furniture, and light fittings were also designed by Aalto. The museum includes the main building, an outbuilding, and a courtyard, which features Pentti Papinaho's sculpture *Suojeluskuntalainen*, a national monument for the Civil Guards.
