Discover more about Tikanoja Art Museum

Housed in a building that was once a family residence, the Tikanoja Art Museum offers an intimate and engaging art experience in Vaasa. The building itself is one of the first residential structures erected after the Vaasa fire, initially designed in the 1860s by church builder Erkki Kuorikoski. Business magnate Frithjof Tikanoja moved into the house in 1918 with his wife Ruusa, and it became a hub for art and culture. Tikanoja, a successful businessman, was also a passionate art collector and patron. He and his wife Ruusa fostered a creative environment, displaying works by Finnish artists like Ruusa's brother Eemu Myntti, alongside international modernists. Tikanoja's collection grew to include an impressive array of Finnish and international art, with a particular emphasis on French paintings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Key artists in the collection include Henri Matisse, Edgar Degas, and Paul Gauguin. In 1951, Tikanoja donated his art collection and the house to the city of Vaasa, establishing the Tikanoja Art Museum. The museum continues to display selections from its permanent collection, alongside temporary exhibitions of both historical and contemporary art. The museum also provides museum pedagogical activities related to exhibitions. Visitors can explore Finnish art from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as international pieces.
