Discover more about Lahti Ski Museum

The Lahti Ski Museum, or Hiihtomuseo, offers a comprehensive look into Finland's rich winter sports heritage. Situated in the Lahti Sports Centre, next to the famed Salpausselkä ski jumping hills, the museum provides a deep dive into the history of skiing, from its early days to its modern iterations. The museum's roots trace back to 1926 with the first ski-themed exhibitions in Lahti. In 1959, the Lahti Ski Club proposed establishing a dedicated museum, and in 1974, the City of Lahti took over the project. The first permanent exhibition opened in 1978 in the old sauna building of the Lahti Ski Club. A purpose-built facility opened in 1989, and it was renovated in 2017. The core exhibition, 'Sense of Skiing,' charts the history of skiing and ski equipment and the annual Lahti Ski Games, which have been held since 1923. Additional exhibits cover women's competitive skiing and the evolution of ski design. Visitors can view medals of the ski-jumping legend Matti Nykänen. Interactive displays include a biathlon shooting simulator and a ski-jumping simulator. The Lahti Sports Centre is an important sports hub with a stadium used for athletics and football in the summer and skiing in the winter. The area includes ski jumps and an extensive network of ski tracks and walking trails. In the summer, the ski jumping landing area transforms into a public swimming pool.
