Rakokivet Erratics: Giants' Playground of the Ice Age

The Rakokivet Erratics, located in Puumala, are a highlight of the Saimaa Geopark, offering a glimpse into Finland's glacial past. These colossal boulders of porphyritic and gneissic granite were carried to their present location by the continental ice sheet during the Weichselian glaciation, approximately 11,500 years ago. The ice sheet, up to middle Europe 20,000 years ago, transported these rocks, some believe they were thrown by giants.As the ice melted, these erratics were left behind, creating a unique and intriguing landscape. Over time, some of the boulders split and cracked, forming cave-like spaces, nooks, and crevices that invite exploration. The area is steeped in local folklore, with the boulders often referred to as “devil's rocks” or believed to have been dropped by giantesses.Today, visitors can wander among these ancient stones, imagining the immense forces that shaped the landscape.
