History of Mount Dora

Indigenous Landscapes and Lake Country

Before the arrival of European settlers, the lakes and uplands of central Florida were used by Indigenous peoples, including communities associated with the wider Timucua cultural region. The waterways around present-day Mount Dora formed part of a landscape of fishing, hunting, travel and seasonal movement. European colonisation, introduced diseases and changing political control severely disrupted Indigenous societies across the region. By the nineteenth century, the area that would become Mount Dora was being drawn into the expanding settlement and agricultural economy of the United States.

Settlement beside Lake Dora

The modern settlement developed in the late nineteenth century as American settlers established homes, farms and commercial activity on the high ground beside Lake Dora. The community was initially known as Royellou before adopting the name Mount Dora in 1883, when the lake and settlement were increasingly promoted as a healthful and attractive location. Its elevation, lake views and comparatively mild winter climate helped distinguish it from flatter parts of central Florida, while the surrounding land was gradually brought into agricultural use.

Railways, Citrus and Commerce

Rail connections in the late nineteenth century strengthened Mount Dora's links with nearby towns and wider markets, helping residents move agricultural produce and receive visitors and supplies. Citrus became an important part of the economy of central Florida, although freezes, changing markets and urban growth repeatedly altered the industry.
