Sandoway, also known as the J.B. Evans House, is more than just a building; it's a portal to the past. Designed by local architect Samuel Ogren, the house exemplifies the architectural style adapted to the local climate and socio-economic conditions of the Great Depression era. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building itself provides significant clues about the values, lifestyle, and social consciousness of the upper-class citizens moving to Delray Beach during the 1930s. For those interested in Florida's native wildlife, the Reptile and Amphibian Room is a must-see. The Nocturnal Room offers a glimpse into the lives of creatures that come alive at night, such as sea turtles, bats, and owls. Outside, the Discovery Porch is home to Maggie, a gopher tortoise, considered a keystone species in Florida's ecosystems. The butterfly garden and native plant exhibits showcase the region's natural beauty and provide habitat for local wildlife.
