Discover more about Fontaine de la Rotonde

The Fontaine de la Rotonde is more than just a fountain; it's a symbol of Aix-en-Provence. Constructed in 1860 and designed by Théophile de Tournadre, this grand monument stands nearly 40 feet high and 32 feet wide, immediately capturing the eye with its impressive scale and intricate details. It was the first fountain in Aix to feature a cast iron basin, a testament to the city's innovative spirit. The fountain features a large circular pool encircled by a chain crafted at the Aix Centre of Arts and Crafts. Around the pool's edge, six pairs of lions recline on marble bases, adding a touch of regal elegance. Within the basin, groups of children ride bronze swans, creating a whimsical and playful atmosphere. Above the main basin, a smaller one is topped with a pedestal adorned with spouting cheetah heads, crafted by sculptor Francois Truphème. The most prominent feature is the trio of statues known as "The Three Graces". "Justice," created by Joseph Marius Ramus, faces Cours Mirabeau towards the Courthouse, symbolizing the city's commitment to law and order. "Commerce and Agriculture" by Louis-Felix Chabaud, looks towards Marseille and the industrial areas, acknowledging the importance of trade and sustenance to the region. "Fine Arts" by Hippolyte Ferrat points towards Avignon, reflecting the city's academic heritage and artistic pursuits. The fountain's location at the intersection of several major streets makes it a focal point of the city. Over the years, the square has been renamed several times, reflecting the changing political landscape of France, from Place du Président Wilson to Place du Maréchal Pétain, before finally settling on Place du Général de Gaulle. The play of light on the water and sculptures enhances its beauty, making it a popular spot for evening strolls. The surrounding cafes and restaurants offer outdoor seating, allowing visitors to enjoy the ambiance while savoring local cuisine.
