Located on Rue Espariat in the historic center of Aix-en-Provence, the Église du Saint-Esprit stands as a testament to the city's rich religious and architectural heritage. The church was constructed between 1706 and 1726 by the Vallon brothers, Laurent and Georges, on the site of the old Hôpital du Saint-Esprit. This hospital, managed by the Brothers Hospitallers of the Order of the Holy Spirit, had been founded in Montpellier around 1197 and established in Aix in 1229.The church's design reflects a sober yet striking facade, characteristic of the Counter-Reformation style, which is rare in Aix. The facade features two levels with Corinthian pilasters and a triangular pediment, creating a play of light and shadow throughout the day. Inside, the church boasts a Latin cross plan inscribed within a rectangle, an architectural innovation for Aix at the time, promoting balance and fluidity. The interior showcases a blend of Baroque design elements, including a grand altar crafted by Auguste Ramel and Jean-Baptiste Casella, intricate sculptures, and vibrant stained glass windows that cast colorful patterns on the stone floors.Throughout its history, the Église du Saint-Esprit has undergone several transformations. It was consecrated in 1806 by Archbishop Jérôme Champion de Cicé, a century after its foundation stone was laid. The church also houses a remarkable organ dating back to the 17th century, originally commissioned for the chapel of the Grand Carmes. Today, the Église du Saint-Esprit serves as a primary parish church for university students in Aix and remains open daily, offering regular masses and a peaceful space for contemplation.
