Couvent des Prêcheurs: A Medieval Convent in Aix-en-Provence

The Couvent des Prêcheurs is a testament to Aix-en-Provence's rich history. Founded in 1272, the Dominican convent has evolved through the centuries, witnessing significant events and adapting to changing times. The convent is the only medieval convent in Aix that has maintained its original structure. Originally established in the eastern suburb of the city, the convent's position was enhanced through urban expansion in the late 14th century and later by King René's development of the grand square in 1470. The adjacent Place des Prêcheurs owes its name to the building's historical significance. Following the demolition of the Parliament Palace in 1776, the parliamentarians relocated to the Couvent des Prêcheurs until the new judicial complex was completed in 1832. This move spared the convent from revolutionary dismantling. Subsequently, the building transitioned into a center for education, serving as a normal school, primary school, conservatory, girls' school, boarding school, and finally, a college until its closure in 2015. Today, the Couvent des Prêcheurs is a cultural venue that hosts various exhibitions and events. Visitors can explore its architecture and tranquil atmosphere through guided tours.
