Place d'Albertas: A Baroque Jewel in Aix-en-Provence

Nestled in the heart of Aix-en-Provence, Place d'Albertas is a picturesque square that embodies the elegance and charm of southern France. This hidden gem, away from the bustling main streets, offers a glimpse into the city's aristocratic past and serves as a tranquil oasis amidst urban life. The square dates back to 1745 when Jean-Baptiste d'Albertas, a member of the influential d'Albertas family, commissioned the square's design. Dissatisfied with the view from his mansion, he bought and demolished the buildings across the street to create a more pleasing vista. He then hired Georges Vallon, son of the city architect Laurent Vallon, to design the exquisite square inspired by the royal squares of Paris. The square is bordered by four mansions with nearly identical facades and wrought-iron balconies. These elegant buildings, adorned with intricate carvings and decorative elements in the Baroque style, create a sense of refined elegance. The fountain at the center of the square, created in 1912 by students from the École des Arts et Métiers, adds a soothing sound of trickling water, enhancing the serene ambiance. Over the centuries, Place d'Albertas has remained a vibrant hub of activity, witnessing countless historical events and local celebrations. Today, it is a beloved gathering place for locals and tourists alike.
