Theater Baden-Baden: A Belle Époque Jewel

Located on Goetheplatz, directly on Lichtentaler Allee, the Theater Baden-Baden stands as one of Germany's oldest continuously operating theaters. Edouard Bénazet, a casino tenant, initiated its construction in 1862, modeling it after the Paris Opera. Architect Charles Couteau designed the theater with a classicist exterior and a French rococo-style interior.The grand opening on August 7, 1862, featured Conradin Kreutzer's "Night Camp of Granada," followed by Hector Berlioz's opera "Béatrice et Bénédict," which he composed specifically for the occasion. The theater quickly became a cultural hotspot, hosting performances by renowned artists like Johann Strauss, Johannes Brahms, and Richard Strauss.Throughout its history, the Theater Baden-Baden has adapted to changing times. After facing ideological appropriation during the Nazi era, it reopened in April 1946 under French occupation, serving as a beacon for democratic education. A comprehensive renovation from 1989 to 1992 equipped the theater with state-of-the-art technology.Today, the Theater Baden-Baden offers a multifaceted program of drama, musical theater, and performances for children and young people. It comprises three venues: the large auditorium with up to 500 seats, the Spiegelfoyer with 30 seats, and the Theater im Kulissenhaus (TIK) with 60 seats, home to the Junges Theater Baden-Baden. The theater collaborates with municipal and cultural institutions, presenting classics in modern interpretations, contemporary works, and premieres.
