The Maison du Sagittaire, or House of the Sagittarius, is a captivating historical landmark located in Amiens, France. Originally constructed in the late 16th century, the building was attributed to architect Charles Bullant. It gets its name from the two Sagittarius figures sculpted above its arched windows. Once situated on Rue des Vergeaux, the Maison du Sagittaire suffered extensive damage during the bombings of World War II in May 1940. Only the facade remained standing. Recognizing its historical importance, the facade was classified as a 'Monument Historique' in December 1941, ensuring its preservation. In July 1952, under the direction of historical monuments experts, the facade was carefully dismantled stone by stone. The stones were then stored and restored inside the Saint-Germain church for eight years. In January 1960, the decision was made to rebuild the facade next to the Logis du Roi. The reconstructed facade was further restored by sculptor André Lavaysse. Today, the Maison du Sagittaire stands as a testament to Amiens' rich history and architectural resilience.
